The Tricky Treat Ball was our gateway food puzzle. We initially got it because it was so cheap, we figured that even if food puzzles were lame, it would be fine to lose a few dollars. Food puzzles turned out to be amazing, and this one has maintained a standing as one of Gracie’ favorite puzzles ever since. It is particularly quiet for a moving puzzle, which is great for dogs who might be sensitive or people who need quiet for work, babies, roommates, or neighbors.

What We Love About the Tricky Treat Ball

  • Soft material is quiet and easy on floors.

  • For a dog food puzzle that doesn’t unscrew and open all the way up, it’s quite easy to fill.

  • The opening has a tube inside the puzzle that makes it much harder for food to fall out than it is to put itin.

  • The dimples make it easier for dog to pick it up, which Gracie likes.

  • It’s so cheap! Even if it doesn’t end up working out great for you, you’re only out $5-$10 dollars.

What We Don’t Love About the Tricky Treat Ball

  • You can’t open the Tricky Treat Ball all the way up, which makes it impossible to clean. That means that:

    • You can’t put anything inside besides dry treats and kibble.

    • If your dog doesn’t finish solving it, it’s a big pain to get the rest of the food out.

    • If you try to clean the outside and get some water inside, it will take forever to dry and may grow stuff.

  • It’s very easy for chewers to destroy it. So, if your dog is the type who settles in to chew when frustrated with a food puzzle, get them experience with other puzzles before trying this one.

  • The perfectly round shape makes it easy for your dog to send it flying in a straight line and lose it under furniture. This is a risk with any puzzle that your dog needs to move around to solve, but it seems to happen more with this than with some others.

Conclusion

Overall, we give the Tricky Treat Ball 3 stars, which we should note, means that we think it’s still a solid puzzle that was worth the money. We tend to be hard reviewers. We love how long it takes dogs to solve and the fact that it’s so affordable. It won’t be the perfect food puzzle for all dogs, but if you think it could work for yours, we think it’s worth giving it a try.
